Seamless elbows for industrial piping systems

Our seamless elbows are used in industrial piping systems, including power plant construction, the chemical industry, refineries, and apparatus and plant engineering.

We supply elbows to EN 10253-2 in Type A and Type B – for standard applications and applications with increased wall thickness requirements.

Our Manufacturing Competencies

Manufacturing & Properties

Our elbows are manufactured from seamless or welded pipes and hot or cold formed depending on material, dimension, and requirements. Forming is carried out using specially designed press and forming processes that ensure uniform material distribution and high dimensional accuracy. Subsequently, depending on material and application, heat treatment and mechanical processing are performed.

Through controlled manufacturing processes, we achieve high roundness, uniform wall thickness distribution, and reliable tightness of the components.

Typical designs and geometries (independent of standard):

  • 45°, 90°, 180°
  • Special angles (e.g., 30°, 60°, 120°) on request
  • Long Radius (LR) / Short Radius (SR)
  • Special radii to customer specification

To ASME B16.9:

  • Standardized dimensions for pipe fittings (e.g., elbows, tees, reducers)
  • LR / SR designs per standard

To EN 10253:

  • Type A (reduced testing requirements)
  • Type B (increased testing requirements)
  • Form 2 (seamless, without longitudinal weld)
  • Form 3 (increased requirements)
    Form 5 (special designs)

Special designs:

  • Special angles and radii to customer specification
  • New die manufacture possible in our own tool shop
  • Extended ends (tangents) per drawing
  • Heavy-wall designs outside the standard
  • Manufacturing to project-specific requirements (e.g., offshore / nuclear)

Type A and Type B to EN 10253-2

EN 10253-2 defines two wall thickness types for seamless elbows – independent of the form (radius).

Nirotec has the manufacturing capability to supply elbows to EN 10253-2 in Type A and Type B – in all common forms (2, 3, 5) and materials. Verification of the tint dimension is documented and provided with the inspection certificates:

Type A – Standard wall thickness

Elbows for general industrial piping applications. The wall thickness meets the standard requirements of the standard.

Type B – Increased wall thickness (tint dimension)

Elbows with increased minimum wall thickness on the elbow intrados. The standard specifies a defined tint dimension for Type B that is significantly above the requirements of Type A.

The tint dimension describes the wall thickness on the elbow intrados after forming. Since the inside is compressed during bending, a change in wall thickness occurs. Type B ensures that the required minimum wall thickness is reliably maintained even after forming.

What Type B means in practice:
  • The starting material (pipe) must be considerably thicker than for Type A
  • Specially designed dies and forming tools are required
  • Not every manufacturer is able to supply Type B
  • Result: higher safety margins, better suitability for high pressure and high temperature
Combinations – form and type are independent:
  • Form 2 / Type A: Long Radius, standard wall thickness
  • Form 2 / Type B: Long Radius, increased wall thickness
  • Form 3 / Type A: Short Radius, standard wall thickness
  • Form 3 / Type B: Short Radius, increased wall thickness
  • Form 5 / Type A: 3D radius, standard wall thickness
  • Form 5 / Type B: 3D radius, increased wall thickness
Typical applications for Type B:
  • High-pressure and high-temperature lines in power plants
  • Nuclear technology – safety-relevant systems (ITNS)
  • Plants to AD 2000 or ASME with increased strength requirements
  • Project-specific requirements of the client, EPC contractor, or inspection authority
